"Phabeing" made by Ms. Pheng of Houaphan Province, northern Laos. Superb weaving of golden, black and saturated jewel-tone silks in floating-weft and discontinuous-supplementary-weft brocade techniques. Animist influences are evidenced by the fantastical creatures depicted: A double dragon in the shawl's center and the lion-elephant chimeras at the ends. Often made as dowry pieces, such textiles display a young woman's weaving skill, and thus marriageability. 108l x 22w
